There and Back Again

Waking up lakeside.

It's been a long time since I've done that, maybe since college when our family rented a small cabin for a few years.

We sat around and drank coffee with friends, heard the lake noises outside but stayed in. Made breakfast, chatted, thought about the day. A truly pleasant way to begin a day.

We went on a five-mile hike that turned out to be longer than we'd planned, but five miles still the same. We missed a turn and took a longer road than going over the hill and down to the loop road. We ended up calling someone back at the cabin who picked us up.

We had cell phones, we heard noises of cars and the lake. We could see where we needed to go, and we got there. It just took longer than we'd planned.

We came home from the lake and had dinner with friends then headed to a birthday party. All in all, a lot of days of community and friends. I felt full which these days, doesn't happen often.

I've spent a lot of time wondering about my life, wishing things were different. In fact, I'd say that's haunted me, the idea that there is something else better out there.

I remember one time reading a story about Barbara Streisand, how she almost married a doctor and moved to Long Island. She said she would have been one of those neurotic rich wives just working on their house. Instead, she did what she did.

I've always wondered about that, and my own life. Where do I fit into that story? I can see how it all happens.
