Among Beans

Over the weekend, I asked a friend to go up to an area in our region that has a group of about fifty farms. I was hoping to pick some veggies, and she liked the idea. I have a few friends that garden, one quite seriously, but mostly we all just go to markets and stores for our food. I'm trying to change that in my life, slowly, baby steps. I was glad she was interested in the experience of it all.

We had also attended the CAC Trinity conference this past April in Albuquerque together. We still talk about it and wonder how this is impacting our lives, if at all.

It is, it is.

We talked about what the Rohr reading was last week, that James Finley was quoting Thomas Merton, how Merton talked about the winnowing down of things to the essentials

After picking beans and tomatoes, we sat swinging in an old metal swing chair together. We talked about our spirituality, where we're both at, what we're pondering, how we're changing.

Eventually, we packed up our bags and boxes and headed home. We kept talking and marveling at the farms, happy we had produce in the back from our time picking and buying.

We were probably gone two or three hours, not long. We bought what we needed and touched base with all we're learning and going through.

I found it comforting to have a conversation with a friend about such things on the edge of a farmer's field.
