Bird Nerd

I wrote this to our group yesterday in an email:

“Does our time together matter?

When we were at the park a few weeks ago, we were listening to the birds making their beautiful sounds. I asked Heather, "What sound do humans make? Do we contribute?"

I've been reading alot about birds especially now as they are migrating. Birds primarily migrate at night and they use tones of varying pitches to talk to each other during flight. They orient each other to each other and to obstacles in their way. It's one of the ways billions of birds can migrate together successfully for thousands of miles.

In thinking about that and about people and how we function together, I realized that our stories, our poems and our sharing is what orients us to what our journey and reality will be together or alone. Alone, we have only our own stories. Together, we can mirror w/ each other how to make it better along the way. Our stories are not insignificant unless you consider migratory songs and notes insignificant to a bird migrating. They are just "sounds", they're the patterns. They're the guides.

Another way you could look at it is, what happens if we don't hear any stories? Poems? What happens when humans have no songs and notes to guides us? We lose our way which looks like isolation, despair and spiritual death.

I read a quote by the Dalai Lama recently and paraphrasing he said that the world doesn't need more 'successful' people. The world needs storytellers, healers, restorers and guides.

Our stories and what we tell each other are our migration songs.  By being together, we're sharing our songs w/ each other and it's everything.

Thanks for being on the flight path with me. I couldn't do it without you. “
