Best Movie Friday

What a long, wonderful week of work and healing. I'm tired today though.

I went to the library to do my writing and research. It turns out they regularly show movies at various branches. Today at 3 they were showing Coco, the Pixar film about a boy who wants to be a musician but family secrets prevent him from doing so.

On a whim, I decided to join. Most of the people in the room were from a group home for disabled adults. I ate a few snacks and colored on a coloring page of a character from the movie. Halfway through the movie, one of the adults turned around and asked me about my drawing, asked if I'd drawn it for her. I said yes and she was excited as I handed it to her. I saw her later carrying it around the library and took it with her when their bus came.

It felt wonderful to rest from work and to be part of that community of adults for a few hours. I interacted with them and shared some time with them. I learned a few of their names.

This is the power of our public spaces and places: people who normally don't interact, sharing time together and being connected with each other. I'm not sure a society is very healthy if we cannot do that or our public institutions don't protect and encourage that.

I hope I don't forget today and the importance of resting and the importance of being available to be with people, whoever and wherever they are.
